“I am first and foremost a songwriter. Whether my songs are tinged with country, celtic or pop/rock influences, my goal is to write soul music - songs that speak to our common struggle to be human. I play my songs with everything I’ve got which is all I have to offer.” David Leask
Originally from Edinburgh, Scotland, David is a powerful performing songwriter, who has built an artistic bridge between the influences of his birthplace and the fresh possibilities of his newfound Canadian home to produce three critically-acclaimed CD's, one Juno nomination and a bag full of songwriting awards. His music explores the diverse landscapes of human emotion using the story-telling tradition of his homeland in his own fusion of Celtic soul & roots rock. The strength of Leask's songwriting has been recognized by winning 1st place in the Gospel category of the International Songwriting Contest in 2007 as well as 1st place in the Blues category in 2006, 1st & 2nd place in the Country category of the 2003 Unisong International Songwriting Competition and 2nd place in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition. In 2004 David was awarded the Mississauga Established Performing Artist of the Year, an honour won previously by Oscar Peterson and Rik Emmett. Having played over 2000 gigs in the last 14 years, David is a very seasoned and commanding performer. He has shared the stage with such artists as The Waterboys, Carolyn Dawn Johnson,Natalie McMaster and the Barra McNeils at theatres and festivals across the country. A gifted songwriting teacher, David has delighted festival audiences, young and old, who have participated in his songwriting workshops.
