Chris MacLean’s music has been described as poignant, from the heart, angelic vocals with lyrics that evoke landscapes in the here-to-fore unmapped territories of the personal. Her debut album, “Learn to Be Loved” (2001) was produced by Ian Tamblyn and features close friend and musical mentor, Mae Moore as well as many of Ottawa’s finest musicians. With the eye of a painter Chris MacLean’s lyrics focus on the details of ordinary life in an extra-ordinary way. Using a simple approach to writing, she draws the listener into sketches of love (new, lost, frayed), friendship, motherhood, political activism and the journey of the soul. She writes with the passion of one who has triumphed over adversity, is unsatisfied with merely surviving and is finally flourishing. Chris grew up In Peterborough Ontario, on a steady musical diet of classical, jazz and folk. She was drawn early to songwriters the likes of Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez and Judy Collins and later became a devoted follower of artists such as Jane Siberry and Suzanne Vega. After taking a 15 year hiatus from her music career to raise a family, Chris returned to the stage in the late 1990's. She started performing Ottawa stages at Rasputin's, The Black Sheep, Perfect Strangers and Lucky Ron’s, backed by musicians including Ken Kanwisher (bass), Alan Marsden (guitars), Greg Brown (fiddle and concertina) and Terry Tufts (guitar, vocals).
